How to Weather a Financial Meltdown in Uncertain Times

Survival strategies for the unemployed and the unemployable.

Take it from me cause I’m probably the last person you want to hear from. Yes, I’m the debt collector. Having worked in this industry for some time now I’ve heard everything. From it’s the ex-husband or ex-wife’s fault to I’m having all these issues including irresponsible youth. Yes, Youth is the number one reason I hear for not paying on bills. Nobody ever thinks anything might happen that might make their finances that much harder on them. Nobody anticipates that rainy day or should I say many rainy days. People have no savings. They are living paycheck to paycheck and when they can’t get that they turn to the government who is stingy in the first place. Uncle Sam may allot you something to pay rent but not all those other bills unless you live in one of those crummy neighborhoods where you find you can’t walk out the front door then what good is it when you don’t feel safe! My answer is not unlike other people’s answer but from working in this industry I’ve learned to empathize with my debtor cause it could have easily been me in their shoes.

That’s how I became a top collector on my team. I feel like the psychologist they could be paying but can’t afford. I listen to their problems and then I select really good plans for them when they feel the amount owed is so overwhelming. Now that word overwhelming is key to a debt collector’s success because people feel just that overwhelmed by life in general. Some tips on how to avoid the debtors trap is usually to take the smallest plan allotted by the collector to avoid them calling so much and then of course getting that really obnoxious collector that would just put you in a bad mood for the rest of the day. Secondly, stop spending for things you don’t need. Some things can wait. I find many of these debtors with the most elaborate cell phones on top of a house phone and another work phone which seem to constantly get their numbers changed. Avoiding someone? Yes, of course you are you’re avoiding the debt collector.

Hopefully in this President’s era we can finally do away with some of the dishonest practices of the credit card companies. However, people that isn’t retroactive meaning what the President signed isn’t going to change whatever mess you’re already in. In fact the bill doesn’t take effect for another 6 to 7 months! Also, there is no escape after 7 to 10 years from unpaid debt. Many people say the SOL or (Statute of Limitations) is out but that is not stopping people in today’s business world. Maybe it has something to do with that bill the President signed or all these banks failing but their desperate to pull money from somewhere. My best advice would be to save your money. If that means going back to stuffing the mattress with your money do so. At least you won’t be the recipient of some harsh words later on. Finally take any decent job you can find. Do not worry about what people will say about your new found profession. I know some of you college graduates are thinking I’m too good for this and I paid all that money why am I here? Do not stress that degree will help you again only it will be later when your assured a management position.
