Psychological Recession

An opinion that we are having not only an economic recession but a bigger crisis, psychological recession.

The worst fall out of the current economic scenario is the total loss of morale. We get up in the morning depressed, read a depressing newspaper full of bad news, and then get our sorry selves to our work place.  The performance of all the employees is lackluster, its as though we are already laid off.   Some of us are not that fortunate, and have already lost our jobs.  Think back to a few years ago.  Life was good, we were optimistic and totally committed to our jobs.  We felt great and had no difficulty being positive, and why not, didn’t our cars, our salaries show how great we were?

Now life is hard, most of us have mortgages, loans and credit cards that have to be paid. Many think it’s the end of the road.  What has changed?  It seems to me that we have quit, even though we come every day to work.  A colleague was telling me today “I can smell defeat in the air.  I hate coming to office.”  This kind of negative mindset is the true picture of recession.  We have lost because we are terrified of being laid off and that is leading to nervous breakdowns, anxiety, health issues and relationship problems.

The big question is “Is there anything we can do to fight this psychological recession?”  Yes, there are many things one can do to keep feeling positive, happy and healthy.

  1. First and foremost, I would suggest tuning off.  Avoid watching news channels and reading a newspaper.  If any news is important, we will find out sooner rather than later.  Why infect ourselves with bad news overdose.
  2. Exercise.  Every one knows that regular workouts release pheromones in the body that make us feel positive and happy.
  3. Every one is familiar with the laws of attraction – but its worth repeating once more.  If we feel like losers, we will become losers.  If we feel like winners, we shall be winners.  Avoiding negative thinking always pays rich dividends.
  4. These days, there are plenty of people who are what I would call emotional and psychological parasites.  People who can only whine about the hard times and revel in bad news.  I simply run away from them.  As it is, it takes effort to keep myself feeling upbeat.  I can do without a self pity fest.
  5. Whatever work you are involved in, do it with complete sincerity.  Your life depends on it.  Keeping busy and earning money is what keeps us going.

A very strange observation from one of my friends was “The young people are not depressed due to the economic meltdown”  It got me thinking.  Yes, this is very true.  It is because young people are full of ambition and full of energy.  They have big dreams, they think like winners and they work hard.  Unlike middle and senior management people, they are not afraid to lose and therefore they are most likely to survive the current crisis and come through as winners.  I think we should emulate them.
