Walmart’s Expansion Plans! Justified Of Not?

Views on Walmart’s expansion plans…

Walmart is one the biggest retail chain in United States and it is planning overseas expansions to increase the company’s revenue and market presence. Recently, Walmart’s announcement of expanding in India faced strong protests from the middle class Indians who consider it to be to a thwart to their everyday earnings since; Walmart will be able to sell things cheaply thereby ruining the small businesses run by these middle class people. I openly think that it is very much unfair on behalf of Walmart and the Indian government to take over the small businesses by leaving them no other option to earn.

There are a lot of families who survive totally on their small incomes earned by running their departmental stores and small shops. India is still not a developed nation and most of its economy consists of people who run small businesses and can’t compete to big companies from developed nations. They definitely deserve a better chance than this. Atleast, they should be given the job assurance if they face any problems due to these expansion plans of big companies. This is not just the case with Walmart, same trend was seen in the telecom area also where foreign investors took over the major portion of the consumer base and left only a small part for the native Indians. Now the in state telecom companies are struggling to keep it up with big companies like Vodafone, Hutchinson etc.

I just hope that the Indian government place some curbs on these foreign investments otherwise may be the economy of the whole country will increase tremendously in the next few years but there will be a huge gap between in the rich and the poor people, which is not at all good for a developing country like India. Let us hope for the best for the common people who are directly affected by this decision of the government.

Obviously some Indians are going to want to shop at Wal-Mart. Those customers will increase their net value and so will Wal-Mart. It is a mutually beneficial relationship between the parties involved, which sounds like good economics to me. How is it good economics to have business competitors use the violence of the State to prevent the voluntary transactions of their competitors?
