10 Benefits of Homeschooling

by Joy Shaymus in Education, January 7, 2008

Many parents are looking for a viable alternative to mainstream education. That’s where homeschooling comes in.

Homeschooling has become very popular in many countries.

However, when parents make the decision to homeschool their children they sometimes feel that the task is daunting and wonder what the real benefits of homeschooling really are.

Basically, there are 10 main benefits to homeschooling:

  1. There is an immediate end to the issue of bullying.
  2. There is a very flexible daily schedule, which means less stress when there is illness or some unexpected problem arises.
  3. There is an almost immediate increase in children’s self-confidence.
  4. There is a great improvement in children’s general disposition.
  5. It is only a short period of time before you,as the teacher, recognize potential,or existing learning problems that your child/children may have. Therefore immediate action can be taken to deal with the problem in order to help the child at a young age,and not be overlooked or ignored completely in the mainstream system.
  6. Each child is an individual and as such you soon learn what strengths, weaknesses, interests and potential your children have and then you can hone the program towards their interests and talents.
  7. The children quickly develop a sense of responsibility towards their education and most become self-motivated and self-disciplined learners.
  8. The “formal” aspect of their day, such as math, spelling, and so on,are usually finished in a short space of time and then they have much time to engage in other activities that they really love or excel in, such as art, story writing, playing a musical instrument, amongst many other things.
  9. There is time to focus on helping others in the community as part of a well-rounded education. For example the children can learn to cook and provide a meal for an elderly neighbor,or sick friend.
  10. By mixing with other homeschooled children in arranged activities, whether a sports day, stamp auctions, swimming lessons, First Aid lessons,or something else, the children develop a wide network of friends and learn to mix and converse comfortably with people of all ages, thus enhancing their socialization skills.
