10 Ridiculous Reasons to Block Websites
Network admins just wanna have fun!
So some websites are blocked for valid reasons. But for some reason by Local Education Authority (LEA) seems to have fun finding new reasons to block websites, or blocking websites for the stupidest or reasons. Some do deserve to be blocked, yes, but not for the reasons they stateā¦
(These are all real, and are all websites I have tried to access to do school work for one reason or another)
Wikipedia
Blocked for: Knowledge
A KKK website
Blocked for: Education
An online forum
Blocked for: Freedom of Speech
My own website
Blocked for: Hosted Website (surely all websites are hosted somewhere?)
Guildwars
Blocked for: Games (even though you must buy the game on CD to play it, it is not playable on the website in any way shape or form)
Alcoholic awareness website
Blocked for: Alcohol
An aids awareness website
Blocked for: Sex talk
Uncyclopedia
Blocked for: Online encyclopedias
Another Aids awareness website
Blocked for: Humour, slang
The school website
Blocked for: Schools
A safe-sex awareness website
Blocked for: Nudity
Blocked for: Search engines

lol what kind of school do you go to? My school you can probably go on all of these except Guildwars.

Mines like that too… Wikipedia’s blocked, forums, unkown websites. Pretty much everything except the school has specifically allowed is blocked.

I agree with you…it’s been three years since you wrote this article and school blocking software has not improved very much. I really think Wikipedia should be available…the resources lists at the end of each article are invaluable. And it is a great tool to teach students about the variability of quality on the web.
