A Lesson Plan for Teachers on Music and Musicology 3
Students will demonstrate their learned knowledge of music terminology by writing a review of a piece of music which they will hear for the first time using their list of 30 terms.
National Standards: (6) Students should be able to listen to, analyze and describe music. (7) Students should be able to evaluate musical performances.
Instructional Materials: Stereo, Recording of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, Handouts of reviews of the initial performances, Computer with access to Microsoft Word.
Problem Statement: When listening to music, there are many times when we may not understand everything that is happening or we may not be able to verbally express what we hear. Many people only define their musical taste by songs they like and songs they dislike. By identifying and describing complex music terms, we will be able to better understand the music we listen to and be able to explain what we hear and how it makes us feel to others.
Computer Integration: With their newly acquired abilities to effectively criticize music, students will use Microsoft Word to write a review of a piece of concert music. The assignment will allow for 40 minutes of computer time to complete the review.
Results Presentation: As the teacher will be monitoring the writing session, it is the teacher who will choose three to five reviews to be presented to the class. The rest of the reviews will be printed out and submitted for grading.
Lesson Introduction: The class will begin with congratulatory remarks from the teacher commending the students work thus far and explaining that their hard work and preparation is about to pay off. “Now you possess the ability to talk about music, to enjoy music for how it affects you and to share your findings with others.” Then they will listen to a new piece of music and as it ends, begin writing their review.
Computer Activities: Prior to using the computers, students will prepare their completed lists for reference and listen to the recording of the piece of music to be reviewed. Once at the computers, the students will continue listening to the recording and write their review using Microsoft Word. After that section of computer time is complete, students will print out their documents and get them ready to be submitted for a grade.
Supporting Activities: As the students are using this lesson as their final project the only supplements they will have access to is their finished music terminology spreadsheet.
Culminating Activity: Students will hand their reviews in to the teacher and then the teacher will select three to five to read to the class so that students can hear some of the different approaches taken by their peers.
Implementation Plan: Prior to using Microsoft Word, the students will listen to the new piece of music to be reviewed, once, in its entirety. Then it will continue to play as they write their review using the computers for 40 minutes.
Assessment: The following is a rubric that will be used to grade this lesson on a 20 point scale. Each section will be graded 1 to 5, 5 being the highest point total making a perfect score, 20. This part of the assignment will be triple weighted so that this score multiplied by three and added to the 20 possible points from Lesson One and 20 possible points from Lesson 2, a final grade for the project will be tabulated.
