The substance of an educational program is called a curriculum. It comprises of the curricular, co-curricular, and the extra curricular activities in schools. Science as a discipline promotes a feeling of discovery, investigative research and independent thought.
The purpose of a curriculum is to facilitate, design, conduct and coordinate educational experiences. It is the fundamental knowledge that all students are required to learn in school. It provides a common learning experience for all students. It includes learning in class and in out of class activities. The aim of curriculum development is to promote harmony, fraternity, regulation and to create a feeling of patriotism in the youth. We need to transfer the true spirit of Islam in the youth.
The aim of science teaching in schools is to promote scientific thought in the young. Science is based on the discoveries of numerous learned men who have left a mark on time. Early Muslim scientists like the Father of Chemistry Jabir Ibn Haiyan, the father of Astronomy Abu Abdullah Al-Battani, Ibn al -Haitham, the Great Optician and the Worthy Physician Ibn Sina to name a few. Reviving old Muslim History with all its glory is important. We can thus develop a sense of belonging in the youth of today.
The youth of today are facing a crisis brought on by rapid urbanization, commercialization even in education, the rapidly spreading menace of acquirement and capitalism.
We need to confront the apathy in youth brought on by uncertain source of income, general feeling of inadequacy, financial insecurity, non existent healthcare and numerous woes.
Science is a discipline which focuses on the relationship of cause and effect; e.g. the properties of an element and its components; the attribute of research and discovery; independent thought; inquiry; the Human body and its systems; its susceptibility to disease etc. The renewable sources of Energy, the value of conservation and recycling, the Green House effect are some of the major issues which we need to highlight. Science promotes an improved quality of living; it facilitates technological advancement and discovery.
People in Pakistan need to utilize the few resources that they have to optimal effect. Animal husbandry, rotation of crops, use of fertilizer, high yield variety of seeds, drip farming in arid regions, improved sewerage to prevent the outbreak of dangerous diseases, vaccination and immunization and the greater gender equality. Female emancipation through education promotes smaller families, healthier offspring, lowers the ratio of female infanticide and contributes to a secondary source of income as females are rapidly moving into small scale businesses such as weaving, sewing, nursing, teaching and even venturing out in the corporate world as lawyers, bankers, and fashion designers. Women are thus equal breadwinners rather than a burden on the house hold. Science education in females extends the marriageable age for girls. This access to education has opened new avenues for the girl child. Men and Women are invariably curious. Science and Technology has satisfied their queries to some extent and whet their appetite for more.
