A Teacher for Integration in “The Baxter Experiment”: Part 2
As Baxter proceeds through the extra work, there will be a time when he does not need to be reminded of the staff acronyms and he will be able to spell notes. This occurs when he will begin working on the next standard in his Success Plan, National Standard 1.2.B.2.
“Sing independently and in groups, both melodic and harmonizing parts, adjusting to the range and timbre of the developing voice” (New Jersey, 2004). He will be able to follow the notation on a given page with the rest of the class. In order for him to gain self-confidence to sing in class, the teacher will tell him privately to lip-sync until he is able to keep up with the music. The next steps will be to whisper, to talk and to sing. By that point, he will have the tools needed to meet the standard.
The next level of Standard is difficult for any student of music and deals with multiple harmonies sung together as a class or within a choir, Standard 1.2.B.2, “Sing independently and in groups, both melodic and harmonizing parts, adjusting to the range and timbre of the developing voice” (New Jersey, 2004). Though his Success Plan is supposed to make him achieve equally to other students, using these methods and working privately with the teacher, he will pass the other students in vocal ability with the proper amount of time and effort. The teacher will explain the “Mary Had a Little Lamb Principle” of harmonization so that he will be able to sing a third above and given melody. Once completed, he will demonstrate for the class and will in turn develop an even higher level of confidence.

Why is it that everyone sings Mary Had a Little Lamb in the same exact key yet everyone sings Happy Birthday in a different one?
