Adult Illiteracy
It is sad that in these times some adults still cannot read.
It is a sad situation that some adults still can not read.
40% of all adults in the USA can not read.
50- 80 years ago it was unnecessary that people read.
You would think that in these times people would have the benefits of education and know how to read.
What I found is that some adults I have spoken with who could not read were embarrassed and evasive about the lack of being able to read.
What makes me mostly upset is that people seem to think that since
certain people can not read, they are ignorant. That certainly is not the case.
There may be reasons that they can not read such as;
Lack of opportunity to learn : Some people may have had to go to work and did not learn how.
Learning Disabilities: In Spite of schooling people may have a learning disability. Especially if one goes undiagnosed. Unfortunately some students with disabilities may think they are not able to learn and give up the effort to learn.
Lack of interest: or what is perceived to be lack of interest.
People who are unable to read at times may try to hide that they cannot read.
However, I know some people who got over their embarrassment to learn to read.
I have seen first hand the pride when they learn. I myself have tutored such people.
I love to read so it really saddens me that some adults can not read these articles. However there are people who are dedicated to helping adults learn to read. It is never too late to learn.
