After College
Some things will change after you have finished college. And the real challenge only begins.
You have finished college for too long if:
- You have more food than beer in the fridge
- 6 A.M. is your wake up hour and not your bedtime hour
- You listen to your favourite song in the elevator at work
- You carry an umbrella
- You watch the weather channel
- Your friends get married and divorced instead of hooking up and breaking up
- You have 7 instead of 90 holiday days
- Jeans and sweaters aren’t part of your wardrobe anymore
- Older relatives start saying sleazy jokes when you’re around
- You feed your dog “scientifically” instead of leftovers
- MTV doesn’t represent your primary source of information anymore
- You go to the drugstore for Advil and stomach pills instead of condoms and pregnancy tests
- You really eat “breakfast food” for breakfast
- “I won’t drink that much in my life again!” is replaced with “I can’t drink as much as I used to.”
- Over 90% of the time spent in front of the PC is really work
This is obviously a small fraction of things, letting aside the humorous introduction.Joke or no joke, life after finishing college and essentially ending the school period of our lives can be very hard.
School, like many other events in a lifetime, changes us to some extent.Of course, many state that, in spite of any conditions, we remain fundamentally the same.I tend to disagree with this because our character is formed by our environment and actions, not only our genetic make-up.Anyway, school is very important for the young man as it develops intelligence(obviously),but it also develops many other skills. For example, being in class with 30 strangers helps you develop your social aptitudes, as well as practising working either together with others or against them.
Because of these, school can be considered a passage. When you enter school, you leave behind all your childhood, including games and friends.Once you leave school,on the other hand, you finally enter adulthood, which demands perhaps even more sacrifices, for example abandoning a frivolous lifestyle like the one depicted in the introduction of this article.
Without doubt, the hardest part after finishing college is to live on your own.As much as your parents can, they will always support you, but the harsh reality we all have to learn is that every man is for himself once he leaves the comfort of the school bench and enters the human jungle.
Getting a job is another difficulty. Many popular jobs that students choose are not always available as there might be too many applicants on too few posts.A six hours a day programme of strictly intellectual work, can hardly give you a glimpse of what a real job is.Of course, if you ever get lucky enough to find a job you really like, then you should have np problem in adjusting to the situation.
In the end, life after the dreaded/relaxed college time might differ for each and everyone of us, but one thing is certain.Once it is over, everything will change and a whole new window of opportunities will arise. So, the only real advice I can tell you, my potential readers is to enjoy life at the fullest and have fun as much as possible!
Yours truly,
Overlord of Beyond.
