Are School Uniforms Beneficial?
A brief recounting of my thoughts about school uniforms.
Many private schools have to make the choice of having uniforms or not. A school that has uniforms will generally say that they have uniforms for one of or all of several reasons. The first reason is a very simple one. They want to be recognized as a school unit and not just a bunch of students gathered together. A second reason is more commonly the answer given to students when they ask why the school has a dress code such as a uniform. The reason is that having a dress code keeps everyone on the same level. When students aren’t concerned about whether or not they are wearing the most popular or the most unpopular clothes on the market, everyone seems to get along just a little bit better, and can focus on other things such as their studies. Another reason that most schools give to as why they have a uniform is this-modesty. The younger generation is losing all sense of morals and modesty. When my grandfather was alive it was considered “showing too much skin” if your arm or leg was able to be seen. Now to be “showing too much skin” you would have to strip all your clothes off and walk down the street! So many schools have decided to use a uniform to stop this in its tracks.
However, there are some problems with uniforms. One of these problems is that modesty issue I just talked about. When you take the decision to dress modestly away from the teens of this age, they won’t learn what modesty is, and in turn the next generation will be even more lax than this one is. Another problem is that wearing uniforms may cause the students to resent the school for not letting them “express themselves.” The next problem that school uniforms have is based on the “express themselves” mentality. Often when you force someone to do something they rebel – it’s our nature as humans to do so. So what do you think students might do when forced to wear a uniform during school? Sadly, the truth is that often unless they have a strong Christian background they will wear very skimpy and indecent clothing outside of school.
Despite all the problems that school uniforms may have they are beneficial for today’s world, and can be corrected, if the school is willing to take the time and effort to teach the students how to dress modestly. This can be done only by allowing the students to dress as they please for a predetermined period of time and making the necessary adjustments to their outfits as needed. Note: this will take some patience for both the students and the teachers. You can also prevent the students from resenting the school if you were to explain the importance of a school uniform to the entire school, and explain it more in depth with the students who ask or seem to have a problem with the use of uniforms. In addition to explaining the importance of a school uniform the school must also be willing to explain to the students that they should not need to express themselves with their clothing. This goal can most easily be reached by using Scripture, and explaining that who the student is in God’s eyes is all that truly matters. Once the school has accomplished all these things mentioned the student will have no desire to rebel against the school, and in turn will have no desire to rebel against God and His principles. So in the grand scheme of things, a school uniform is extremely beneficial because it is a spiritual discipline that will cause the student to grow closer to the Lord.
