Attacking the School System
The first thing our government tries to destroy in the time of need is America’s school systems. Why? We need to stand up against the government and let them know that this isn’t right.
I have been out of high school for almost three years now. This may seem like a short time but in those three years a lot has changed. I recently discovered that hundreds of schools in the district that I attended are being denied sports and extra curricular activities due to budget cuts and a failed levy. It seems whenever disaster strikes the first thing that suffers is our students and our teachers. Believe it or not high school, for lack of a better word…sucks! Without these little things like marching band, football, and cheerleading; the students will be without anything to look forward to. For me, friday nights were my safe haven. I knew that at the end of the week I would in those bleachers cheering on our crapy football team. When I say crapy I really mean the worse but it didn’t matter. We were with friends and having fun. Now what are these students going to be doing on a friday night. Most likely they will create their own fun with drugs and/or alcohol. These activities are what keeps these students grounded and out of trouble. So why are we taking them away?
I was lucky enough to live past the first levy that came through my town but the second time around wasn’t so lucky for a lot of incoming freshman. For a lot of freshman, high school is what they have been looking forward to for several years. Now, they will not be able to enjoy the full experience that is equipped with pep rallies, committees, and musical vibrations that once crowded the hall ways. It just seems so wrong for someone to do this.
Then the students are mad at the voters for the failure but in reality the government is trying to charge these people hundreds and hundreds of extra taxes just to front the bill. Let’s be honest…the school system isn’t getting this money. So why do we need to be furious with the voters. We need to step back and direct our attention to the government for allowing these counties to fall into mountains of debt.
In reality almost all of these activities are paid for by the member as it stands. I know the activites that I was a part of cost me hundreds of dollars to be a part of. The schools systems need to give the organizations a chance to raise the money then make their decision to cut. There many ways to raise money. Fundraising being at the top of the list. Maybe we need to start utilizing this list and coming up with a solution.
In conclusion, all I can say is good luck to all those school systems out there whom are one step away from housing a lot of angry and hostile individulas. don’t let this happen in your area. Be smart about how you spend your budget!!

I agree that this is a sad situation for schools and our blossoming young adults. I was anchored so much by being involved in sporting activties. Especially in small towns like where I was from, there really isn’t much more for the young to do to have fun that isn’t in some poor situations or characters to be influenced by. For those who are not academically strong in the school setting but can thrive and grow in sporting events connected through the school gives the student a healthier view of school and that they DO BELONG there and can excel and have a reason to do their best in the classroom (meeting GPA standards to play). I also believe that we want our young adults to be well rounded which makes for a better member or society, neighbor, co-worker…

If america’s youth do not have a way to express themselves in positive ways through extra curricular activities such as sports, music, and ROTC, they will find other ways such as gangs, drugs/alcohol, and teen pregnancy…
Great alternatives huh!!!

Amanda this was a very good article. Well written. I totally agree with Troy. What alternatives are they giving our children? What kind of future do they have to look forward to? It makes me sad. Government does suck. We need leaders that are willing to stand up for our future and our children.
