Bristol: Best Place for University?

What makes Bristol such a good place to go to university?

Choosing a university is a daunting tasks.  Information floods in from everywhere: prospectus, website, friends, friends brothers dog etc.  This article is not a comparison between Bristol and elsewhere, it is just a summary of what 4 years studying in Bristol had to offer me.

Bristol is a great city so it is hard to know where to start singing its praises.  So I decided to categorize its attributes into: University life city centre activities, nightlife, nature and surrounding activities.  But first I will start with a description of Bristol’s general feel.

Bristol is a young and vibrant city.  It is small in comparison to some other cities in England but it is a place that easily captures your heart.  From the Banksy art scattered around the city to the dark booming underground clubs, Bristol has an urban feel to it.  The ‘drum and bass’ touch, gives a nice contrast to the beautiful houses of the Clifton area.  The different areas of Bristol cater for everyone, the nice open spaces of the Downs, the smart picturesque Clifton, the reggae Montepellier, the bustling St.Nick’s Market and the ‘street’ streets by the river.

University life

The University’s campus is dotted around central Bristol, but the student atmosphere that has been created is second to none (slight bias possible here).  During lunch everyone pores out of lectures and into whatever is free: cafe, sandwich shop, pub…anything will do!

Luckily the horrendously ugly Bristol Student Union is being replaced as you read, because despite the ugly shell, the union is a thriving part of uni life.  The society’s are all well run with many of the sporting ones fairing very well in inter-uni competitions.  The first year student halls are also a hub of activity.  Cheap drinks in the hall bars is the perfect recipe for meeting people, and the perfect place to start a night out.  The late night bus service into town creates a nice blend of singing and rocking students.  Starting university can be daunting, but in Bristol that feeling evaporates after the first hour!
