Broadening Access to Education
In spite of the remarkable efforts by countries around the world to ensure education for all, more than one-third of the world’s adults do not have access to education due to geographical constraints, cultural and social barriers and lack of educational infrastructure. These problems constrain efforts to meet basic learning needs. Conversely, open and distance learning which is designed to deliver education to students who are not physically present frees learners from constraints of time and place and offers learning opportunities to individuals and groups of learners.
Open and Distance Learning creates opportunities for lifelong learning, no matter where or when learners want to study. It frees learners from constraints of time and place and offers learning opportunities to individuals and groups of learners. This learning mode responds to the needs of such students for lifelong personalised learning; thereby improving students access to education.
The adaptable nature of Open and distance learning provides alternate avenues for those who cannot afford to leave their job to attend to a full-time educational program. It provides incredible opportunities for the sick that would otherwise be unable to attend lectures on campus in a conventional classroom education. It offers decentralized and flexible education thus making it possible for people to start or return to school.
Open and distance learning incorporates widely interactive electronic technologies such as video-conferencing, electronic mail and the world wide web to provide appropriate interactive learning environment. This learning mode responds to the needs of such students for one-on-one tutoring, thereby improving students’ access to education.
ODL offers decentralized and flexible education thus making it possible for people to start or return to school. The sick that would otherwise be unable to attend lectures on campus in a conventional classroom have the opportunity of continuing their education by means of open and distance learning.
Studying for a degree is much more convenient through open and distance learning. It has displaced the need to drive to campus or perhaps relocate. Those living in locations that constantly experience floods and who would have found it impossible to transport themselves to lecture venue, are able to access the lecture materials at home.
Distant learners do not have to spend time in class listening to lectures and so are able to spend the time on other work. In this way, they are able to work and study as well as maintain their family responsibilities.
It provides the opportunity for learners to communicate in a less risky learning environment. They are able to interact honestly without having to risk of speaking out in a crowded classroom. These students appreciate the chance to get acquainted with their instructors and classmates. ODL makes it possible for learners to seek support from other students offering the same course, the tutor, the institution and other students in the institution.
More and more public institutions are moving into Open and distance learning, thereby seeking to lower tuition prices which would in the long run benefit learners who would otherwise be unable to afford the tuition in a conventional schools. Therefore education for all is attainable through Open and Distance Learning which broadens access to Education.
