Bullies That Rule
Some observations about how school systems should be held responsible for bullying.
The bully hat ruled in my case, called Jack used to taunt me in my face, somehow he must have found that I had a gentle aspect and would not hit back. I had a longer nose that I was taunted on and glasses didn’t make things better. The image of the guy would remain in my mind for the sake of revenge, yet there was a curious liking later on when we met and he did not recall all the taunting. That was because the fellow matured and I hate to carry a grudge.
The same can be said for a spunky young lady and her influenced friend who’d cornered me a school yard. To hit back was no-no and I remember the intimidation still today. The friend would not have acted on her own but that is the power of the bully, to be able to draw attention to him or herself. I remember being discourage to partake in school yard activities on top of the taunting and today. So many years later these thoughts still linger as has happened to thousands out there. Then when she found herself a student job in the early seventies, not only did she forget who I was, she had no recall of ever having taunted anyone.
Bullying comes and goes then, it a phase of development, you might say but today a lot goes unpunished as occurred in my time when I was fearful of having to mingle with these classmates during recess activities or they sought me out to degrade me. Such is the case of a recent happening in the city that has caused a boy’s family to move away, because the school took no action after several years of taunting, not after a few days.
To the parents surprise the child became irritable at home and would not easily want to be left alone. He feared going to school and meeting that bully who would even threaten his friends. Is this how life should be led?
In another case which was broadcast on CJAD during the Judy Mason show a young boy was just told to ignore his assailants. How do ignore something that can become even life threatening when teasers can punch and kick in groups?
The schools in question should be taken to court for their ignorance and denial. If they are going to pull out a school code to go through bureaucratic steps when there is a definite threat, they should be sued. Similarly if all they can say is ignore the situation, maybe the principals should have their own kids taunted to see how futile that solution is. Parents have to be proactive so that their kids don’t go up with emotional scars.
