Can You Help Your Child Become More Intellectually Brilliant or Talented?

     Believing that the mind is a powerful thing, believing that children can be assisted to learn with a higher capacity than thought, I would like to throw out the suggestion that an ordinary child can become far more superior in his or her intellectual abilities  if given enough help and time on task.  This is of course a controversial subject, and I do maintain that some normal children may never be placed in a category of being highly intellectual or gifted..  I also believe the fact that many children have inherited intellectual gifts that put them in the category of possessing  high cognition or being  gifted.  Perhaps you,  know someone who ranks high above others with remarkable talents and capacities. 

     I recall  to mind a mentally challenged  young man whom I met, who won the 1st place prize in city-wide piano recital.  He demonstrated his unique talent with a piece by Mozart which he executed beautifully with a loud round of applause following.  There were many common tasks that he could not do without supervision.  His grandmother , however, saw to it,  that he took  regularly scheduled music lessons and practiced daily.

     In my immediate family, I have a cousin who is fluent in over 5 languages.  The last count I heard was 15.  He has a high intellect and has been used by the Red Cross to interpret during times of disasters.  While in the armed services, he learned the native languages of the people in different countries, and upon returning to the states continued to study other languages in college.  Notice that a person who is brilliant must study.  Talent and abilities must be linked hand in hand with reading and practice, and study.

     There are other families I know whose children were innately brilliant.  Each child had a special talent and found it easy to get excellent grades in school.  This corroborates the fact that intellect, many times, is derived genetically.  On the other end of the spectrum, I have seen that retardation sometimes runs in certain families. The degree of retardation my vary from child to child. 

     How can I help my child become more brilliant?  It is not an easy task.  You will have to spend time and money to first have your child tested by professionals.  This can be done at various colleges and universities for a fee.  Usually undergraduates or graduate students give the tests with supervision being provided by their instructors.  Or you may go to a psychologist or counselor.   The testing is essential to ascertain the level on which your child is functioning.
