The hominid diet was more varied than previously thought, according to a study published today in Science, indicates that local environments are much more important in determining the diet that the anatomy of the species.
Professor Peter Ungar of the University of Arkansas, and Matt Sponheimer of the University of Colorado, reviewed data from recent studies and across different techniques “to develop a synthetic view of the diets of early hominids,” they said in a interview with Efe.
Traditionally, studies on the dietary habits of extinct hominid species have focused on tooth size, shape and morphology as well as stone tools and bones of slaughtered animals.
