Classic Language vs. The Evils of Lol
A plea for intelligence.
Since when, I ask with extreme indignation, did lol become a word? I recently picked up my copy of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and no where in the novels brilliant text can you find the ‘words’ lol, lmao, brb, ttfn, and thank goodness for that!
It is shocking to me that today our language is so horrendous that we have to resort to using lol instead of actually laughing or expressing in words our appreciation for a joke.
What does this mean for our precious children? Stupidity! Ignorance! How can we expect our children to read let alone encourage the necessity of reading when we can not even talk?
One might say that I have to accept the unfortunate technology that is replacing the page but no I will not. Instead of expanding our children’s minds and teaching them to research we teach them to ‘google it’. Instead of teaching the necessity of language skills we sit back and watch our children type their impressionable brain away on Facebook.
There are some truly magical, utterly educational and absolutely marvellous children’s books available to all of us and yet this invaluable resource is being ignored because for $29 a month we can download tales just as good.
Through reading children do not just learn language, that is just the tip of the iceberg! The learn about society, history, environment, animals….everything!
And most importantly the use their imaginations.
A child’s imagination is the most precious gift it has. It teaches them to explore, experience, think, it is utterly priceless.
So I ask all of you to not only encourage your children not to become mindless slobs but me a role model. Pick up a book, learn! It is the most wonderful gift in our privileged world, learn and teach our future!

This is a very true and well-written article. Technology is great, but… What is it doing to our future?!
