Codes and Education
How educational codes affect the lower and middle class in the society.
Code theory, is an important factor to consider in any educational system. The importance of this theory to any educational system, lies in the fact that the school system requires the use of an elaborate code, which in most cases can not be accessed by all students. Code theory is controlled by the class system, because the differential access to the elaborate code does not occur randomly, making it an important code theory in the field of sociology.
The two groups; the lower working class and the middle working class enter into different type of relationship, by expressing themselves in different ways through language. The lower working class urban children, tend to have a restricted code, while the middle class children have a code that is elaborate and restricted. Since the lower and middle class use language for the same function, Some languages are necessary and needed for school situation. When the class of the lower working group, is expected to exploit language for functioning implicitly, it does not express it normally, there by creating a discontinuity between his school and his home environment. The child learns to verbalize certain range of meanings in his home, and when he enters school, another range of meaning is needed.
There is a subtle, and non-expressive real sense to what a child is taught, and learns. The middle class children, pocessing both code experiences, may have no such discontinuity though, they tend to use the right language required by the school.
