College Entrance Exams: Are They Biased

An Essay on the SAT I Exam: American Oldest College Entrance Test.

Nevertheless, I believe the crux of the problem may reside in a human factor rather than in statistics.

After all is said and done about the biases found on test taking exams, females once in college are better than their male counterparts because of certain human factors in their characters, more than in anything. In my humble opinion, in regards to philosophy theory in Education, it has dawned on me that it is quite reasonable to think in the many ways women’s relationships flower in a college setting. As a result they are more dedicated and studious than males. Besides their attention to detail in their relationships, as well as in other areas,

could be the cause of their better functioning and scoring in college.

Being a keen observer, I have noticed the kind relationships that female students regularly build with their professors, no matter if these professionals are men or women. The empathy and –for that reason– the sympathy developed between them, is quite superior due to the fact that the way women approach a relationship is more intuitive and personally concerned with feeling and results, rather than in status and competition as those seen in male students.

Men, once in college tend to segregate themselves and usually ask questions from their peers rather than going straight to ask or talk to the professor. Males, also tend to be more assertive, due to their competitive natures, and rely more in their cognitive and analytical powers rather than in presentation or in developing a relationship with the professor. As a result, all this is scanned and programmed in the brain of college professor who tend to think highly of those students they see as more dedicated to their own course of study, which flatters them in a positive way.

All in all, I believe that men and women have their own positive and negative educational traits, but on the whole, relationship building skills play and important role in the college years. Even more so in regards to academic performance.

However, a different song is being played in the outside world even though this has been changing rapidly in the last two decades. Women are really taking, progressively though, their true place as equals to men in society.

The purpose of this essay is not to establish superiority of one gender over another. I believe we have to look at gender in a complementary manner, so as people from both sexes could be seen by employers, politicians and scientists, as well as test developers, as the dichotomy that may solve most of mankind problems, given, of course, a thorough preparation and exhaustive self examination and sincerity.

Well written piece that, as you say, does not answer the question of bias. Testing is probably flawed in other ways than bias.

Whether it be biased or not, depend much on human aspect. As for example, essay writing is very subjective, one may be biased to give out lower marks due to some unexpected flaws. Thanks and have my liked it.

It is interesting to learn about the entrance exams for colleges in America. I wonder if the same theories would apply here in the UK.
We have just had our GCSE results and the gap between the achievements of girls and boys has widened considerably in favour of girls. An interesting and well written argument.

I read an article the other day where a discussion was ongoing about dropping the Sat and Act. Your article explained a lot.
