Community Service– A Dreadful Task or Beneficial Event?
Should community service be required in American schools for graduation?
In grade school, I saw upon the walls “big words” such as “perseverance, respect, and trustworthy”. In class, teachers taught me how to spell these words and I came to know their meaning; however I never truly understood them until I began participating in community service. It helped me understand these traits and incorporate them into myself. Some people claim that this character was not built by community service, however as shown by my experience, it is. I noticed a major shift in my own and my peers’ behavior and character once we began community service. The Dalton school announces that our world is one filled with “cynicism” and that community service “enables the individual to learn for himself and to teach herself. “ The taught material of community service is character traits. These positive traits will be instilled in the children’s minds forever. Therefore, positive traits lasting, correlates with positive community lasting. Character traits, infused by way of community service, benefit the individual for life and the community for generations.
Required community service is a controversial issue; although, it is obvious that it is good. Neil Howe and William Strauss say ethics are increased for the millennial generation because of community service. Howe and Strauss, along with many others, exclaim the good of community service. Opponents of required community service may whine about the forceful part, but it is clear that school administrators must require community service for graduation. Although these antagonists do not value community service, it is a necessity for personal and societal development. For everyone to prosper, everyone must remunerate one another.
