Day with The Mayor

This is about how a seventh-grade student at Lakeridge Junior High School got to job shadow with Governor Gary Herbert.

A seventh-grade student at Lake ridge Junior High School got to job shadow with Governor Gary Herbert. Chris Horne lives right next door to the governor and took the opportunity to ask him at church if he could tag along with him for a day to fulfill his school assignment. Chris suggested that he shadow him when other Lake ridge seventh-graders would be doing in their job shadows, but Gary Herbert told him Monday would be a much better experience. Chris wasn’t at all disappointed with that. On Monday, Chris got to sit in on a one-on-one breakfast meeting between the governor and U-V-U President. He also accompanied Gary for an interview on The Doug Wright Show on K-S-L radio. Chris said the best part of his day was when Governor Herbert introduced him on air as Christopher Horne, a student at Lake ridge Junior High. Governor Herbert talked about why he was with and what it was like to be governor. Chris said the governor introduced him to everyone they met, including members of a legislative caucus where Gary presented his proposed 2010 budget in the Gold Room of the state Capitol. Brenda Horne, Chris’s mother, said the idea to approach the governor about job shadowing him for a day was all her son’s. When they were turned down by a scheduler in the governor’s office, Chris didn’t give up, and instead gathered his courage and asked Governor Herbert in person. Gary Herbert said yes immediately and Chris’s mom was shocked.  Brenda Horne is proud of her son for having the courage to ask for the opportunity, and that he got a glimpse into a world that few get to see up close and personal. Governor Herbert said Chris got VIP treatment and got to see things some people never will. I think that is amazing what Governor Herbert did.
