Dealing with Discipline
No matter how interesting and well prepared our lessons may be, students may ruin it during few minutes! We have to control them well, and apply useful strategies in order to get a well controlled atmosphere in class.
- Expect misbehaviour: Keep watching the room during lesson, be aware students may be distracted.
- Use gestural signals: Try to catch the student’s attention by catching their eye, or participating them with your questioning.
- Keep calm as much as you can: Try to stay calm even if the student was rude or impolite, because some students work to loose your calmness, keep your voice calm to maintain confidence,in order not to lose your respect.
- Be fair: You have to determine the exact troublemaker, and not the reacting student.
- Keep it private: Try to keep your problem with the trouble maker private, this may affect him/her in a positive way and solve the problem without repeating it again and embarrassing him/her.
- Avoid comparing: Try not to compare between pupils, this may cause hatred between them as it is unfair.
- Defuse and Avoid confrontations: Try to hold over the reprehension until the end of the lesson and avoid the loud voice.
- Apply the reprehension on the troublemaker: don’t apply your reprehension on the whole class!
