Defining “Adequate Yearly Progress”

In defining AYP, the state must do the following…

  1. Adopt the goal that all students will be proficient within 12 years (that is, by school year 2013-14).
  2. Determine the starting point based on school year 2001-02 achievement data.
  3. Set Intermediate goals of progress, with the first increase occurring within two years (that is, by school year 2004-05) and proceeding equal increments thereafter (in intervals of on more than three years) to reach 100 percent in 12 years.
  4. Establish annual measurable objectives – Which can remain the same for more than one year – for math and reading/language arts within the intermediate goals
  5. Establish at least one additional academic indicator, which for high schools must be graduation rate.
