Developing a Child’s Passion for Reading
Now that we are already in a world where people especially kids are slowly but surely turning away from books and mostly getting glued to computers or television monitors, the essence of developing one’s passion for reading cannot be ignored. Reading must become a habit and should be developed when the child is still relatively young. What can you do to cultivate the practice of reading?
Here are some suggestions:
1. Enroll your child in reading classes:
There are lots of well-organized after-school reading classes that aim to
get the interest of children in reading books. They support kids with the proper diction, phrases and idioms. For young students, these activities can be enjoyable with the use of some animated characters and images. Rhymes, books with illustrated images, silly songs and fictional stories all catch the young child’s interest. Being creative to capture that children’s wide imagination can really help them get used to reading books at a young age.
2. Know your child’s interest:
Pick a number of reading books that feature your child’s favorite cartoon or movie character. For my son, it was Spongebob and Tom and Jerry so I bought him several reading books featuring such cartoon characters. Thanks to Spongebob and Tom & Jerry, my son developed his reading habit because he was having fun doing so.
3. Build a home-library with children books all in one place:
Having a well structured place at your home for your child to read books can help in developing this habit. Do not leave all the books anywhere. Make a space somewhere at home where your child can see and make him remember his habit of reading. I have a small place at home with all our books well-organized and everytime my son come across the mini-library, he suddenly thinks of reading a book he likes.
4. Allow kids to read online but make sure not to make it a habit:
Sometimes, letting the kids read on the internet can greatly help them acquire more advanced knowledge as the information found on the internet are a lot more updated and advanced than those that are published on paper. Just make sure the child do not get addicted to it.
I hope these tips can be of help to anyone who reads this article.

I’m certainly glad that I was encouraged to read as a young child, it’s stuck with me my entire life. However people are different, and I believe that those who aren’t avid readers simply don’t understand how it is for those of us who are.

Somebody definitely needed to write a piece like this which reflects the declining priortization of reading in the west and perhaps worldwide. My mom used to read to me until she was hoarse. Thank you

What a tremendous theme for your article. As a great lover of books, I so wished that my son would be an avid reader. It’s the way he was brought up – and yet he hardly ever even reads a magazine now that he’s grown. How’s them apples? SO disappointing that he doesn’t cherish books like I do.

I loved to read as a kid, but when I got older I think I got turned off by the forced reading assignments in school. Probably a good idea to encourage kids to read what interests them.

Developing a passion for reading is something that is necessary but sadly becoming more lost. Not just with children but in general.

Yeah, I used to be one of those little boys that hates reading. My mom got the Harry Potter book when it first came out and that helped a little but what I liked was anime. When I found out about manga that’s when I really got used to it. You have to go with what you like first and it’ll branch out. Now I write poetry.
