Displinary Problem
In the internet age, parents and teachers must be creative in tackling disciplinary problems.
With the Internet widely spread across the globe, our disciplinary problems in school has gone to the whole new level, so to speak. Since the dawn of the millennium, people never stopped talking about the greatest inventions of all time, at the same time, the net seems to be taking its toll on discipline involving the youngs at school. And so, it is the parents and teachers role to be creative in tackle the modern generation discipline problems which sees fit.
As we all know, disciplinary problems have always existed in schools. The common range from absenteeism to bullying, smoking and gangster-related activities. While the current ones involve recreational drug abuse and (unsupervised) Internet use which leads to many sexual and gambling activities, which is also were non-existent in the past. These worsening of disciplinary problems in school had led National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) as a governing body of all Parents-and-Teachers Associations (PTA)s in Malaysia to come up with a solution in inviting the police to visit high-risk schools. The schools should invite police personnel to join monthly PTA meetings to discuss matters in relation to student’s discipline. The police officers are encouraged to go out of their way to patrol in the school compound once in a while to monitor the students, especially during and after school hours where cases of bullying and fighting among the students easily take place around the school compound. This effort will be effective in bringing down the cases of bullying since the frequent presence of police officers able to keep the bullies at bay in conducting their act.
Corporal punishment such as the squats or caning are no longer relevant nowadays since the students are more daring and brazen about their actions. After all, such punishment only seems to be working momentarily without leaving much effect on the students in the long run. Here, I would suggest the school keep tabs on students by installing closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV), swipe cards on biometric devices to monitor their disciplines in school. By installing CCTV, students will be more in control of their behavior, and think twice before sending out blows to their peers or smoking in school area. Whereas swipe cards and biometric devices encourage students to attend school on time and truancy among students hardly to take place. Whenever a student is late for school, he or she should be reprimanded providing irrational excuses.
