Dress Codes in School

Reasons why we have school dress codes.

School dress codes seem to be on the rise. There seem to be more dress codes in schools limiting what students can wear to school and even bring to school with them. You will begin to see throughout why these codes and rules are in effect for our students and why some officials believe these codes and rules will keep our children safe while they are attending school. Also we will see why some feel that these strict codes and rules may take away from our student’s individuality.

If you look at the last ten years you can probably remember hearing some incidents that has happened in a school that has made the news. One of the most tragic incidents that have happened is the Columbine shooting that happened in Littleton, Colorado. The two boys involved in the shooting wore trench coats to school. There were no codes or rules that stated any student from wearing trench coats to school. The two boys were able to bring in guns and knives, among other weapons to school, that was concealed in their trench coats. From this resulted many students and a teacher losing their lives.

Another incident is the case of a teenager by the name of Marche Taylor. She was denied entrance to her senior prom because of her skimpy dress she was wearing. Officials felt her dress was inappropriate to wear in a school setting. She had refused to leave the prom after being asked to leave and was eventually arrested by police.

The school officials had every right to ask her to leave when she was dressed like that. This dress had violated the school dress code. Marche Taylor was aware of the dress codes and just because that it was a senior prom did not mean that those rules did not apply. She must have felt that she could get by with it at a dance.

As in the first incident, most opinions are that the school should have had striker dress codes to prevent students from bringing anything into the school that should not have been there. This would mean that students would not be able to wear or having anything in school that would allow them to smuggle anything into the school.

Certainly pros and cons to uniforms in schools. It’s on the increase over here again now too. My only problem is the cost to those parents who can’t afford a full wardrobe of specific items. Apart from that, I don’t have an issue with it and your points made here are very valid, especially from a security perspective.

Thank you for your opinion. I do agree with you on school uniforms being a bit expensive though. And it is harder for parents to afford in many cases, mine included.

I disagree with the idea that uniforms in schools could have prevented something like the Columbine massacre. Even if they could not use their coats to hide the weapons, what would stop them from showing up late, fully armed, and just rushing into the school?

You make a very good point and that that could have happened. But I was just stateing that uniforms could be a tool to help slove things like this from happening.
