Effective Teacher Qualities

Being a good teacher is relatively easy, but being an effective teacher requires a variety of qualities.

An effective teacher needs to possess attributes, such as patience, compassion, creativity, tolerance and organization.  Patience is essential because children learn at different paces.  While working with multiple students, a teacher needs to exhibit patience in understanding students learn in different ways, and aren’t going to be at the same skill level.

Compassion is also an essential attribute for a teacher to possess.  Students have a life outside of school, which can impact a student’s mood or state of mind, affecting their willingness to learn and ability to concentrate.  It’s important for a teacher to be personable and show compassion in order to make students feel comfortable.

Many students are disengaged in classrooms because they find the material mundane, meaning that creativity is imperative in order to capture the interest of students.  Teaching children who are not interested in various subjects, teachers need to be creative in finding solutions.

Tolerance is also important for a teacher to possess.  Classrooms in Canada are some of the most diverse environments. It is important that a teacher possess tolerance in order to foster a classroom environment of acceptance and respect for one another.

Furthermore, organization is a vital quality for an effective teacher.  A teacher works on multiple lessons, and sometimes with multiple classes a day.  In order to keep track of what was taught and what is going to be taught, organization is paramount. And there is nothing worse than losing a student’s test or project which they spent hours on, before even getting a chance to grade it, and give them credit for their effort.
