Eight Suggestions in Teaching the Youth Effectively

How can we effectively teach the youth? What strategies teachers should employ in reaching out to them.

The efficiency of teaching does not only rest on the amount of knowledge a teacher possesses or on the level of his IQ. Most often, the primary factor that plays a vital role in the learning process is the ability of the mentor to communicate and deliver the knowledge he wishes to convey to his students. This is complicated all the more by the learners’ level of maturity to comprehend the knowledge being conveyed. In addition, this significantly varies according to age bracket in which the students belong. In my ten years of experience, I came to believe that the following tips can be much helpful in making sure that the learning process is effectively carried out among the youth.

Reach out to their level and then raise them up slowly to yours.

As in most cases, teachers tend to be impatient when it comes to the pace with which their students learn the lessons. The mentors having been accustomed to higher learnings, as expected of them, sometimes treat their students the way they were treated by their Masteral or Doctoral Degree professors. Or perhaps, they unconsciously pass on to their young students the standards which they have acquired through the years. The type of medium teachers use for example can be far too incomprehensible to the limited vocabulary of the students. For this, a mentor must be able to know how to lower his standards in order to reach out to level of his students. For instance, using of simpler and common words would be much helpful than making use of those which only “Webster” and “Merriam” can understand. Nevertheless, it will not also be good to just stick to the most banal language because it will not enhance learning anyhow. Probably, using a few high level terms from time to time but never forgetting to explain their meaning will be just fine. From the student’s level, the teacher should facilitate learning in a manner with which the students will be able to rise to his mentor’s ascendant standard without being overwhelmed.

Be abreast in your field of specialization.

One thing very important for a teacher is being updated in his field of specialization all the time. This is an imperative that comes along with the required mastery of the subject matter among mentors. If one does not know any new knowledge along his field or what remains in him are obsolete informations, then there is no mastery at all. Never go to your class unprepared. Don’t be contented with being just “one-page-ahead” of your students. That would be extremely lousy for a teacher. It is worthwhile then to continue studying and researching in your field of specialization. Reading can be the simplest way among them. Besides, modern technology nowadays offers all the opportunity to keep you abreast with recent studies and researches at your own choosing and at the tip of your fingers. The web is a place co can go without leaving the comforts of your home and where everything you need to know can be at your easy disposal. Being able to give newer ideas and not being behind in the current trends and development in your respective field is something you owe to your self.
