Language Games should be important part of any ESL Teachers Teaching strategy. Not only do English Language Games help the students to understand key elements such as vocabulary and structure they also bring an element of fun to the lesson. It’s well known and also well documented that human beings learn better when they are relaxed and enjoying themselves! Here are a few language games that’ll liven up your English language lessons.

The Adjective Action Game

The Teacher writes a list of activities on the board such as walk, read the paper, sit down, clap your hands etc. The teacher then brings a student out to the front and points to one of the activities. For example clap. The teacher then shows the student a card with an adjective on it. For example slowly. The student then has to perform the action using the adjective. He or she will clap their hands slowly. If they get it right they then earn a team point.

Air plane Competition Game

English language games like the Air Plane Game are very easy to play and the kids love them. All you need to do to play this game is to make two teams. Then give the students some paper and tell them to make paper airplanes.

After that line them up and tell them to throw their planes at a particular object in the classroom. It could be the waste paper bin or the blackboard. The student then has to throw his plane and hit the object that you’ve told them to. If they are successful their team will receive a point for being correct. You can assign your own points to the various objects. For example.. Hitting the waste paper basket could earn a team 10 points and the blackboard 5 points and so on.

English language games should occupy about a quarter of your lessons and should in most cases be related to the materials that you have been teaching. However you can use language games as filers or rewards for good work.
