Experience and Theory Which is The Better Teacher?
Experience and theory which is the better teacher?
Throughout the different stages of our life, we learn from many things and people around us. When making a comparison which source of them is the most important, I’m in favour of the statement “Experience is the best teacher” for some following reasons.
Firstly, in fact, you may be trained well at your school or university but without experience you are likely to make more mistakes or slower while working than a less-educated person being widely experienced. Let’s take an example. A student from a medical university who has read many medical books but never performed any operation before is unable to work as well as a surgeon with extensive experience gaining through a hundred of operations. A non-native speaker of English may spend all time on grammar books and learning many vocabulary, but his English cannot be improved as quickly as one who uses English frequently to communicate with native speakers. It is called “Practice makes perfect” In addition, it can be clearly seen that not all the successful people in the world complete their education. Bill Gates, the giant of Microsoft, and Steve Jobs who is the leader of Apple did not graduate from university but they are now billionaires. One of the most important factors leading to their success is the experience they have gained from their life.
Secondly, we can learn about science, technology, mathematics and other academic subjects from books but there are also many things we cannot learn from them but from our experience. In the daily lives, children learn how to communicate with other people, how to make friends with their neighbors, and they can learn how to keep away from the dangerous factors after being hurt although it was useless for their parents to tell them not to touch dangerous things while they did not obey before. That is how experience works with children. Furthermore students in colleges and universities need experience for their lives and careers in the future. Students should learn how to get along with their classmates and workmates to work in group which is an important skill required for many jobs. There are also many requirements such as how to deal with real-life situations, how to make a decision for ourselves, or even what we have to do when we fail in achieving our goals. How can the book “How to win friends and influence people” of Dale Carnegie help us if we just read it and not to practice to gain experience?
The third thing that persuades me “experience is the best teacher” is it helps us more convincing. In a debate or an argumentative essay, you can give many arguments to protect your point, but only with examples taken from your experience can you make yourself understood thoroughly and reasonable.
Role of book can be denied, but there is a limit to what they can teach us. They have so much valuable information and knowledge, but what we learn from our experience are the most important. Nothing is more important than experience- or let’s say experience is the best teacher.
