Faux Intelligence

These days, intelligence is measured by how much a person can remember. School wide tests, SATs, ACTs, quizzes and all other types of “aptitude” tests measure the ability for one to remember facts about a particular topic.

That is all wrong.

If this were the case, which it isn’t, computers would be ridiculously smart. On the contrary Oh mon friary. Computers are stupidly retarded. Simple concepts need to be told to the computer. For instance, when an object is moved from point X to point Y, the computer must be programmed to understand the fact that the object is now located at point Y. Another example, if a computer were to navigate a maze and it hits a dead end, the computer would crash without somebody programming it to turn around. Computers cannot adapt to unforeseen circumstances. Humans, will instinctively turn around in such a case.

There are all types of questions if you fail to answer, you will immediately be labeled dumb. Don’t know where Iraq is? You’re not alone.

So tell me, what use do I have for this type information? To satisfy the immediate curiosity of a person who thinks they are testing my intelligence? Will I actually use this information in the long term? For the majority of us, no.

No my friends. This is what intelligence is NOT. Intelligence is not the accumulation of facts and their relation to one another. Intelligence is the ability to LEARN. The ability to say “hey, my boss was not happy when I super glued his ass to his chair. Maybe I shouldn’t do it again…”

So I don’t know where Iraq is on a map, I know where to go to find out. So I can learn if I need it. This gives everybody the potential to be an intelligent human being. Many still fail at this potential… but hey, we can’t be smart without the stupid.

So in closing…

if you know where to go to learn it, you aint stupid.

Joshie boy out.
