Federally-Funded Education

College and university education should be free for all students, fully financed by the government.

I agree with the opinion that college and university education should be free for all students, fully financed by the government. First, students can focus more on their studies rather than on their finances. Second, equal opportunity will apply to all students who are from a low to high level in society. Third, contributing to a better economy would be another reason for offering free college and university for the students.

It is true that taxes would increase if the government offers fully financed education to all students who want to continue their studies to college and university because “fully financed” means that the government will pay for students’ tuition, books, housing and food. Therefore, citizens might pay higher taxes in order to help the government to cover those expenses for the students. However, focusing on studies rather than finances is a more important factor for the students in order to concentrate more during their studies. Students who are worried about their tuition and other expenses will try to find a part-time job during their studies. If they have to split the time between studying and working, they cannot concentrate on their studies 100% because they are tired after working. For instance, if a student has classes from 8am to 2pm and works from 3pm to 6pm Monday to Friday, by the time she/he gets home at 6:30pm, she/he will feel very tired and cannot study efficiently. Therefore, the student might not have a maximum performance in her/his studies.

Secondly, equal opportunity will apply to all students who are all levels of society. The students who are poor tend not to continue their studies to college or university because they have no money although they are willing to continue their studies. For example, my cousin was born in a middle-class family with many sisters and brothers. By the time she finished her high school, she had to consider the budget in the family since she still has three younger sisters and 2 younger brothers who were still in the elementary school. She wanted her siblings to finish their high school because she thought higher education would lead them to get better jobs. For this reason, she had to sacrifice going to college after her high school. If the government had offered fully financed education for her, she would have been able to finish her college and university and given her an equal opportunity to other students from high level society.

Finally, contributing to a better economy would be another reason for offering free college and university for the students. After graduating from college or university, students will compete in their jobs to invent or create new products with better quality to maintain their positions in the workplace.  For example, Germany is one of the countries that offers free college and university to its students. Because of the high level of competition, German companies always offer the best quality products. Therefore, their reputation for high quality is well-known around the world, which leads them to have a better economy. In addition, my father is a recycling plastic manufacturer. He always buys his machines from Germany since he trusts the quality of the machines. Although the price of German products is more expensive than that of China, my father sees the better quality and efficiency by the low costs of production.

For the reasons mentioned above, government should offer students fully financed to go to college and university because students need concentrate more on their studies rather than finances. Moreover, in my opinion, equal opportunity is the most important reason to give students a chance to continue their studies although they are poor.  Therefore, they will have the same opportunities in the workplace and try their best to contribute to a better economy for one country because of the high competition for jobs.
