Fund Raising in The Band

As a member of any extra curriculum activity, you become familiar with fund raising early.

Being a high school band member was not different.  I think the school board at the time only allotted less than $500 to our activity per year, far short of our minimal needs.

So we sold Krispy Kreme donuts on Saturdays.  Fortunately, the donuts were synonymous with yes I have to have them.  And the only other thing I have found in the south that has the same kind of following is the regular original Krystal burger.  So regular original Krispy Kreme donuts sell well, but you have to be an early bird to make the money.

Another fun event we did several times was a rock a thon.  The local Mickey D’s helped us by running a promotion.  We rocked in rocking chairs for the whole weekend for cents per hour compliments of sponsors.  But anyone who purchased a regular hamburger during the 24 hour period was helping us also.  We received all the proceeds for that period.  We earned just as much on the sales as we did the rock a thon.  It was a great social event.  If you do this, bring plenty of blankets as it gets nippy at night, even in hotter weather months.

We also had a haunted house for several years and did quite well. The only problem was the longevity opportunities did not exist.  Our high school was in an area that was developing rapidly.   As development grew, our possible supply of old houses to haunt went away.  But it is a great idea if you can find a place.  One of the best haunted houses I ever went through was actually on the grounds of a college.  The students utilized some of the classrooms.  So you are not limited to old houses per se.
