Going to University? Improve Your Application!
How to do so.
If you’re thinking about going to University at some point in the near future, then you might be getting a little bit worried about the fact that there are thousands of students competing for Universities that simply don’t have enough places. Because of this, it is important that you are able to make yourself stand out from the crowd in your application. This can help for you to do so.
- Do the best you possibly can academically. While this might sound obvious, too many students simply work towards the offers that were given by universities the year before, and then they find that they get left behind because the offers are much higher this time around. If you feel as though you have underperformed during the exams, then see if there is any chance that you could resit those papers to boost your final grades. Every little helps, and you might find that it would be the difference between you getting the place and not.
- Research the university. It helps to know about any research that they’ve done in your subject area, or anything that the staff have done. Being able to mention these in your application or interview (if you get to that stage) would mean that you were at a huge advantage with your position, as you would be showing a genuine interest in the insitution that a lot of other people might not be able to show.
- Do a lot outside of college. If all that you have to show for yourself are academic grades, then you may find that this is not enough in the current educational climate. You should try to show yourself as an all rounded person, whether this is a love of golf, motor racing or sailing- every little will help. You should also be aware that extra curricular awards, for example Duke of Edinburgh and any music qualifications would reflect highly on you as an individual.
- Try to get some work experience. If you know that you want to be a vet, for example, then try to get some work experience during your time at college. This might just be something as simple as watching a vet work for a couple of weeks, but it would look excellent on your application.
No matter how you choose to stand out from the crowd, the most important thing is that you do so, as that will be the difference between the person who is given a place, and the person who is turned away.
