Hangman Game for Esl Classroom Teaching

Create more fun in your ESL classroom with the hangman game.

This game is such a golden oldie classic that I think it doesn’t really need a big introduction. It’s simple but yet time and time again it has proved a great vocabulary builder for children learning to speak English.

One of the reasons it’s so popular in the ESl classroom and amongst English teachers in general is that it’s so simple to do! It really doesn’t need an awful lot of preparation on your part. In my opinion hangman should be used to revise previous vocabulary that you have taught, but then again that’s really up to you!

How to play

1. Tell the students that you are going to play a game and explain the rules to them.

2. Draw some dashes on the board where the missing words are going to go. Example:

_ _ _ Our missing word here is cat.

3. Now ask the students to call out a letter. If the students get the letter correct then fill it in like so if the letter that was called out happens to be A.  _ _a _.

4. If anyone shouts out a letter that is not in the word then you start to draw the gallows.

5. If the students get the word right then they win. If they don’t they lose and it should look like a man hanging from the gallows.

This is a really good game and students love to play it. However it’s only good for revision and vocabulary building, not conversation! http://esljobs4teachers.com http://thailanddelights.blogspot.com
