Home Schooling?
Is it a good idea?
The fact is that today, our technology is so advanced; people can do things that people previously thought impossible. People have already changed many ways of doing things, such as going to the market, banking or even travel overseas. But, even with today’s technology, should the technology of today influence the way children are taught? Is home-schooling really a great idea?
Home-schooling has a lot of benefits, but it should not be encouraged. Students work better more with peers than without. Friends can influence the way students work in a number of ways, like somebody to look up to, or to talk to in breaks. This may sound like a small thing, but it actually is a very important thing, because this can affect work drastically.
With home-schooling, students can have bad social skills, such as being disruptive, in a future occupation, like working in an office. Social skills required that is learnt from teachers who explain how to communicate properly is not present, so if the home-schooled is in a meeting, they may be disruptive and will most likely get sacked. With other cases, some students won’t even be able to get a job in the first place. Also, students do not look forward to breaks, because there are none, or because they don’t do much at all in them. If the student plays computer games or watches TV, they may not want to come away from them and continue learning. They can also be very annoyed and lazy, sometimes resulting in obesity.
It is also doubted that parents or machines can properly supply information taught in universities, or purchase items like chemicals for science cheaply. Their knowledge is not so wide, so they cannot teach all subjects efficiently at all. Teachers and professors in high schools and university focus on one topic only (or only a few) to provide a lot more information and learning in one subject. Chemicals, food and other things like computers and intranets can be very hard to use or buy, meaning a lot of cost and trouble. If the computers one day break down, learning may halt until it is fixed, meaning it’s an unreliable task to do.
These are some factors of why home-schooling is not such a great idea. With regular schooling, students and parents can worry a lot less, and expenses are covered by the school. My view is that no matter how advanced technology gets, even if there are robots that do our work for us, or machines to give us every resource imaginable, some things can not be done with technology, nor done yourself.
