Homeschooling is a wonderful venture both for the parents and children. The challenge comes with the High School students and finding the right curriculum to suit their needs. Below is a list of resources we use as an eclectic homeshool family that schools exclusively High School students.

First and foremost the best guiding resource is the McGraw Hill GED book. I am sure that prices vary from place to place but we were able to locate this book at Books-A-Million for $32 and it has proved an invaluable guide for us. We use the pretests as a starting point and decide where each child needs the most work. We also use four main sections of the book as a main teaching source.

Edhelper.com has been an amazing resource for us. We use the High School section for vocabulary, history, math and language. The subscription cost us $40 for one year. We sign in and print worksheets and lessons for months in advance so our school day is always ready to start. There is plenty of reading material available through this site as well as material for reading comprehension.

YouTube has been an amazing resource for our math lessons. Who would have thought right? As a parent/teacher math is not my forte’ at all. This does not stop me from teaching our children and learning something myself. When we begin a new section in math we pull up YouTube for the latest instructional video which takes us step by step through problem solving.

Netflix has been yet another invaluable tool for our family. We utilize the documentary section to back up what we learn with Math and Science. We also use Netflix to back up what we learn from the news. When the kids express an interest in a popular topic we search Netflix to see what more we can learn on that given subject. Our Netflix subscription costs us about $8 per month.

Lifeprint.com has free lessons available to teach our kids American Sign Language. This is an elective that we chose so our children will have the opportunity to converse with the deaf community. We also use a book that we found for free but please forgive me because I do not know the name of the book off the top of my head.

We have many more free resources we use over the course of a given school year but these are the most used resources by our family. Aside from ink for printing we spend roughly $32 per child in a year and roughly $150 a year for extra resources. Our ink and paper costs roughly $30 a month. These costs are not bad for homeschooling four High School kids.
