My daughter home schools her children, She has children ages eight months to age twelve. Her oldest child attends public school special ed classes twice a week because she has some learning disabilities. They were advised to home-school by the school district because they live three miles from the bus stop and winter’s where we live are snowy and lots of ice. This month alone we already have four and half feet of snow and today we got eighteen inches more.
The school officials three years ago now advised my daughter to home-school due to deep snow in winter, plus we have cougar, bear and moose that frequent the area. It is a three mile walk each way from their home and or mine. My daughter and hubby were struggling to juggle work schedules, with school bus schedules. They live two and half miles from me and have six children. They could not afford to pay for after school day care cost for the older children. I care for cared for the younger children who were not in school.
Winters here can be treacherous with from three to ten feet of snow. Often county plows take two to three days to get to our back roads. Four wheel drive is needed to travel to our homes in winter months and school buses do not come to the house as the roads are narrow with few places to turn around. Most the families on our roads home-school.
We have neighbors who help neighbors to plow out and keep the roads open and driveways cleared. We usually have a small ATV with a plow attached to it for lighter snow fall and a 1964 International Scout with a larger plow but both are down right now and waiting for parts to be shipped from the warehouse this week. So we were out of a plow.
My son in law both is plow are down as well. Last winter 2007-2008 we had 10 feet of snow where we live and winter lasted from before Thanksgiving until June 8th. We usually get in ten to twelve cords of firewood. We did not have a garden this year due to snow. We did not have spring. The two months of extra winter stole a lot of time from us. Equipment for plowing needs to be fixed and repaired and sometimes other things get in the way.
