I don\’t have too much against homeschooling children at an early age, 1 thru 3rd maybe, but just like everything else in America, there are many who try to cheat the system to cater to their specific needs instead of the children. I know each state has their own regulations regarding homeschooling, but I know the state I live in doesn\’t monitor the progress of these children enough, which leads to the children suffering later on in life. I think more extensive study shoud be done on homeschooling, and a comparison made on homeschooled kids, and kids in a school environment. Good article for debate. well done.

I agree with you on the people catering to their own needs more then their childrens’. I know in our state we do keep close track of the homeschooled children. I chose to cyber charter school my kids because our public school has a horrible special needs department. And my sons medical need (asthma) can not be watched. They share one nurse for 2 schools and another nurse for the other two schools and will not let him carry his own inhaler. I think alot of debate will occur because of every state and school district being differant. I do know that some studies have been done between homeschooled kids, cyber charter school kids, and public school kids. Homeschooled kids and cyber charter school kids came out on top for good self esteem and self worth. Homeschooled came out on top for the kids that retained the most materials. Cyber Charter school kids came out on top for the highest graduation rate and test scores. Public school kids came out on top for socialization but the other two types were right behind. Although that is another area of debate. How much weight do we give those studies? I was personally surprised to see how low public schools rate on those studies. Anyways, thanks for your interest and comments on my article. Gonna read yours tonight after I get my 4 little ones to bed.

And by the way I have unfortunatly met a few parents that were homeschooling there kids and were not really doing it. In our state these parents do get busted since we have to do all the same testings as public schools but we also do Aims testing 3 times a year to make sure the homeschoolers and cyber schoolers are meeting grade level goals. Still very sad that parents would screw up their childrens education and futures. It takes a lot of time, energy, patience, and determination to homeschool or cyber school your children.
