Homeschooling: Struggle or Beneficial?
There are many advantages (and yes, some disadvantages) to being homeschooled. How do we meet friends? How do we go on so many vacations during the school year? Why did our parents choose to homeschool us? These are just a few of the questions about homeschooling that I will address here.
Homeschooling has quite a few perks involved with it. You can go on vacation whenever you want during the school year. You do not have to get up at 5:30 in the morning to get ready for school. Some kids who are lucky enough can even get away with doing homework in their pajamas. However, sometimes it can be a little more difficult to go out and meet new people. Although, if you are in a home school group, that usually fixes the social problem that most people see with it. Since home schoolers are so flexible, another option is to find a part-time job. The job I have right now hires and fires people like crazy so I am constantly meeting and working with new people.
My parents took me out of public school once I finished the fourth grade. My mom and dad were concerned about what I would become if I went to public schools. I am not at all saying that everyone who goes to public schools are bad or completely terrible, but I am saying that there is a possibility that I would have become more “worldly” if I went to one. It is a difficult choice to make.
Another question that most people ask is how do home schoolers go on so many vacations during the school year. Since all of our homework is at home, either in our books or on our laptops, we could, with some preparation, pack up our books and go see Mount Rushmore as part of a “history assignment”. That is how flexible we are.
Getting up is the best time of day when you are home schooled. Although I hate getting up any later than 8am, I could get up at 1pm every afternoon. A question that I and many other home schoolers get all the time from teens is, “So, do you stay in your pajamas all day and do your homework, because I would love that!” Surprisingly, the answer is no. Getting out of your pajamas actually helps your mind to work better.
There is a thing out there today about home schoolers and their grammatical errors. Half the time people are just joking around, but the truth is that home schoolers get a better education than most public schoolers. Home schoolers take the initiative to get good grades because we have more responsibility placed on our shoulders. Even though our parents are our “teachers”, this is usually only true for the younger students. Once high school comes around the corner, the subjects get more difficult to teach and you end up teaching yourself from a book, but it is not as bad as it may seem. Your parents end up grading your homework and that is it. Public schoolers, which is in no way their fault, are told what to do by their teachers and only have to do it. Home schoolers have to organize what they need to do each day and then do the right amount to stay on track. There is a lot of self-determination involved with homeschooling.
It is your (or your parent’s) choice whether to home school or public school. You may have tons of friends at a public school or you may like the idea of being able to wake up whenever you want. Weigh out the positives and negatives of each one and then decide which you actually like better!
