How Much Homework Should Students Be Assigned?
Different teachers will assign different amounts of homework based on their teaching philosophy. Some schools have guidelines as to how much homework needs to be assigned. Here are some general ideas about length and type of homework to be assigned on all grade levels.
- Grades 1 through 3: 20 Minutes of Homework! This is a good amount of time for these ages but also keep in mind that these young students often love homework and want more. They enjoy the satisfaction of completing the work and also the rewards that come with following directions. The assignments should be a reflection of what they learned in class.
- Grades 4 through 6: Up to 40 minutes of Homework! Here is the time of the students educational life that they either keep their vigor to complete their homework or begin to rather do other things after school and see it as a trouble. Regardless, the total of all subjects can be anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. These homework assignments are often repetition for memorization or reading comprehension responses to readings done both in class and as part of the homework.
- Grades 7 through 12: As much as 2.5 hours! When it comes to this large age group, the assignments really depend on the tracks of the students, their individual capabilities and the amount of projects they are working on. While some nights they should only have about 40 minutes, they certainly can expect those 2.5 hours every once in awhile. Another big variable in this time assessment is the ability of the student to complete the work in a certain amount of time. An accomplished student may finish the same amount of work in a single hour.
In the end, it comes down to the teacher, the student, the administration and the school but use these guidelines as an idea of what to assign and what to expect.
