Before beginning the application process into an MBA program, get organized and know what’s expected of you. Once you’ve determined the schools you’re interested in applying to, find out exactly what they need and make sure you’ve got it. MBA programs have strict criteria when looking at applicants, and if you fall short, now is the time to make corrections and improvements. Maybe you need to improve your college GPA, retake an entrance exam, or don’t have enough work experience under your belt. If that’s the case, now may not be the right time to apply. By finding out what’s expected, you’ll know if there are any loose ends you need to tie up before applying. It’s also important that you know what the application deadlines are and that you respect them. There’s a bit of truth to the old saying, “The early bird always catches the worm.”

Submit a Professional Application

Nearly all MBA programs ask that you fill out a formal application. This may be your chance at a “first impression,” so avoid mistakes at all costs and make it look professional. Do a rough draft first, and type the final application.

Update Your Resume

Your resume and how it’s presented say a lot about who you are. Be sure it’s honest, current, and professional. There are plenty of online resources available to help you create a resume that will get you noticed.

Obtain Letters of Recommendation

Most MBA programs ask that applicants submit letters of recommendation, and it’s essential that you choose good people to write them. Letters of recommendation should attest to your experience, character, goals, accomplishments, and work ethic. Ask for letters from people who know you both personally and professionally. Their recommendations should be honest and sincere, so it’s important that they understand and support your career goals. When asking someone to write a letter for you, it may be helpful if you give them copies of your application and your resume for easy reference.

Represent Yourself Well

Depending on the MBA program you are trying to get into, you may have to do an interview. Some schools conduct phone interviews, others interview applicants in person. Prepare for your interview by reviewing your career goals and reasons for wanting to get an MBA. Be well rested for your interview, look professional, and be confident without being arrogant. You may also be asked to write an essay as part of the application process. If you are requested to write one, take your time writing it and write multiple drafts. Have a few different people read your essay and ask them for some honest feedback before creating your final draft.
