How to Prepare English Faculty

Some ideas to improve English faculty in providing future teachers of English.

How The Faculty of English Department Prepares Future Teacher of English

In globalization Era the faculty of English Department has to prepare its graduate teachers. The mark of information and economic rapid change is through English language. People all over the world use English not as necessary language but become “need” language. Contradicting to that fact, in Indonesia English Language is still considered as difficult to learn, many students fail to master active English. English has been taught as merely language study regardless the function of English as a mean of communication. Therefore English Department has to make some ways in order to prepares future teacher of English.

The several steps which is very important to take in order to prepare future teacher of English are

1. Make a standard of good qualification of teacher of English

The faculty of English department should set some qualifications of its graduation. The qualifications are very important as guaranteed that teachers of English when they have to teach, they can master English as well as the teaching method and management of teaching. Therefore future of English teacher of English is able to perform well in teaching English. The standard qualifications of future teacher of English are TOEFL score minimum 500, mastery of teaching method, mastery of class management, mastery of interpersonal communication as well as psychology of learners.

2. Make Cross Culture Understanding as a major subject that the future teacher of English has to take

In globalization people come from many countries to our nation freely as if there is no borders between one country to another. People who use English are not only from England and America, people from many different cultural backgrounds use English as their international mean of communication. The user of language should realize that when she or he talks he is not only use the language but also carries his or her values and cultural perspectives. This will be an obstacle in communication if the user of the language doesn’t realize the need of cross culture understanding. By understanding the differences in culture and background, the user of the English language can tolerate and have an open mind toward diversity of values and cultures. Therefore the future teacher of English should learn and master cross culture understanding.

3. Give scholarships to outstanding teacher to study in English spoken countries

By giving and sending outstanding teachers to English spoken countries, the outstanding teacher will gain new knowledge and experience. When they return to Indonesia, the outstanding teacher can share and apply her knowledge to teach her students and her English teacher colleagues.

4. Make association of teacher of English.

This association is a forum of discussion and evaluation. Faculty of English department can facilitate its graduation of teacher of English to gather in a community where they can share knowledge, experience, and program of English. By having an association of teacher of English, future teacher of English will be ready to face the future and feel that she is not alone when she has problem in teaching.

5. Make Technology of Information as the major subject that should be mastered by future teacher of English

Technology of information is a medium for gaining knowledge and information. Technology on information use English as the prime language in operating and transferring information. A future teacher of English should be able to master and use technology of information effectively because there is a big wave of changing of student’s condition. Student is more eligible with information, they use Internet and computer even they use multi media as a medium for learning English. Therefore, future teacher of English should master technology of information so the teacher can keep up with the change of information which is mediated through language.
