Is Distance Learning the Right Choice for You?
What you should know before embarking on a distance learning course.
Am I talking straightaway to someone or some people today who intend to study for a particular course through distance learning? If that’s you then there are a few things you need to consider before diving into it.
Distance Learning is no doubt an effective way to study when taking into consideration the flexibility it offers. “At you own pace” says the slogan. After a long and stressful day at work, it’s hard to attend classes and sit down there for another two or three hours twice or thrice a week listening to the teacher.
That’s where distance learning plays its part. It fits around family life. While studying at your own pace distance learning keeps you connected to your family. They are still around and you have the opportunity to start any time. Besides the fees for distance learning is much cheaper than attending classes.
Although distance Learning is an effective to way to learn, it nevertheless has flaws. It presents itself as a stand alone tuition without the teacher to interact with. Therefore if you want t be successful with that method of learning, you are the one to raise up to the challenge.
A bit of advice.
You have to bear in mind that choosing to study through distance learning is not a simple game. In fact it is very challenging and demands will and persistence to succeed.
If you are willing to discipline yourself to study then you can go ahead. Prepare a time table and stick to it. Some subjects are not too difficult but some are really tough and require long hours of study.
Depending on what you decide to study, get ready to spend at least the minimum hours (2 to 3 hours) required for your research and homework.
If you’ve been given a deadline to finish your homework and send it to be corrected, make sure you respect that, avoid delays.
Keep focus to avoid distraction and move from your place only if its really important. If you move from time to time to do bit of chat here and there or are attracted to the television program and leave your study room several time, to watch what’s on there, very quickly you lose interest and delay your work. Always shut the door behind you and pretend you are in class.
Loads of research and documentation are important because the teacher is not available to answer questions and discuss topics with you.
In particular cases where laboratory experience is needed you might make arrangement with your distance learning tutor to arrange a time for you to get practice at the lab.
With all the various software applications available nowadays, communication and file transfers are not restricted. You can chat online, access file for a small amount of money or sometimes for free, you can cut and paste articles related to your study and keep them on your key drive or in a file on your laptop for later use.
Video conferencing is at hand so you are not really left on your own. With just a simple registration you can virtually enter the conference room and get involved in discussion with other students. You can spend time sharing your knowledge and listen to others, ask questions and give answers.
If you have already thought of all those above mentioned points and got them right in your mind that that’s how it would be when you start your distance learning studies, then the next step is to go online and take the time needed to look for all the various colleges offering distance learning for the courses you want to follow.
Make a few choices and prepare your questions and forward them to the advisor /customer care of the colleges you picked up. Ask as many questions as possible. Compare quality and prices, discuss with friends and people you know could help. Once your mind is made up on the college of your choice you are ready to go ahead.
