Is Mandarin a Useful Language to Learn Right Now?

America is in debt to China for over 370 billion dollars. I am not going to get political in this article, however many events could take place if America does not pay off that debt. Either way, we will need to be able to communicate with them by learning Mandarin. Won’t we?

Why You Might Want to Learn Mandarin Chinese

Which country has the largest population in the world? Which country is America in debt to for over 370 billion dollars? This country is China. I think it might be a good idea for people to learn Mandarin Chinese.

What will happen when America decides that we can not pay off that debt? Well many things could happen and I do not plan to get political in this speech. However, I can say that, whatever happens, we will need to know Mandarin to communicate with them. It is estimated that millions of Chinese will move to America by 2050.

While in New York, I met a guy, about 17-18, that couldn’t speak English, only Spanish. This reminds me of the Chinese in my homestate.  There is a considerably large amount of Chinese just south of Indianapolis like most populous cities in America. Learning this language could help reach out to them and talk more about the Gospel.  I am not saying that the Chinese are the only people that need to be reached out towards, but they are whom I am currently talking about.

A few things you might want to know before taking Mandarin is the very basics. Ni Hao means hello. Zai Jian means good-bye. Wo Bu Hoi Shuo Putonghua means I do not speak Mandarin. Mandarin also has different tones. The word Si has a few different meanings. The meaning of one of them is number four, but another means death. This can become confusing to someone who can not determine the small tone differences between the words. Someone saying, “You are number death,” in Chinese would not be good.

Chinese is a hard language to learn. Trust me, I know. Like most languages it is all about memorization of different words. Writing and reading Pinyin (which is the written form of Mandarin) is even more difficult that speaking it; however, I believe it will be a useful and profitable language to learn. Any amount of work you put into learning Mandarin will be very helpful to you in your future, but Mandarin can also help you talk about the Gospel right here where you live.
