Lawrence High Uniforms: Current Events
School uniforms noticeably improve student life at Lawrence High.
School uniforms will unquestionably bring uniform success. In the article, “New Meaning to school colors: Lawrence uniforms tie hue to specialty”, Russell Contreras explains that in Lawrence High School students are being forced to wear a specific uniform based on their prime area of study. This new policy will do absolute wonders for the school, despite heavy criticism from students.
School uniforms will bring Lawrence High huge success through organization, school spirit, and spare time. Organization is nearly impossible in Lawrence High School, which contains over six schools and 3,000 students. With the addition of the different school uniforms, however, staff and faculty members are able to keep tabs on many more students than previously possible. As Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy remarked, “The different-color uniforms not only create identities for the new schools, but also help faculty and staff keep track of the 3,000 or so students” (Contreras A1). If students are in an unauthorized area, teachers and staff will know due to the uniform color. If there are non-uniformed students or people on campus, they will be easily spotted.
There will be a severe cut back on classing cutting and tardiness, along with more security from outside intruders. School uniforms have also been known to usher in school spirit. Students will now be much more likely to proudly display their school colors. They will begin to obtain a sense of school pride and become proud of their school. The individual schools may also have some friendly inter-school competition, like trying to raise the most money for a charity. Supporting the idea, the superintendent states, “But all the research that supports uniforms shows that it creates team spirit” (Contreras A1).
Students can now attend pep rallies boasting their school uniform and colors. They can say, “ We are Lawrence High, and we are proud!” In addition, students will now have more free time in the morning. Before, students would have to worry about choosing an outfit to wear to school, but now they just have to slide on their uniforms. The extra time can allow students to sleep longer, eat a breakfast, or even finish up some homework.
The extra time can be used wisely, which will improve health and attitude overall. One student commented, “It used to take me an hour and a half. I used to get up mad early. Yesterday, however, it took me five or ten minutes or so to get dressed” (Henriquez A1). Dileydi Henriquez now has an extra hour and twenty minutes in the morning. In conclusion, uniforms generally bring improvement to schools.
Parents, especially the ones from the Dominican Republic where schools uniforms are common, are in favor of the idea. Uniforms have brought success to many schools such as the ones in the Dominican Republic, and now Lawrence High is next on the list. Students enjoy more time in the morning, experience less stress about clothing issues, and can feel proud of their school. With an increase in organization, school spirit, and spare time, Lawrence High is taking a turn for the better.
