Luck in Our Personal Lives

Luck is a surprising ingredient in our lives. It raises its head when we least expect and it is known for taking a multiplicity of forms.

Do you consider yourself lucky?  If so, you are one of the fortunate ones.  Some people may believe that luck may depend on the good things that happen, but it can also be in those things that do not happen.  There are those that do not recognize it.  Luck may be under their radar so to speak.  Some that are religious may claim that it is the working of the Holy Spirit, but many simply prefer to call this occurrence luck.

Look for it in relationships

Being young, a person has dreams of meeting that special someone.  While attending college, he is surrounded by brainy types that are pretty, but he does not click with any of them.  He may hate the bar scene and prefers to attend mass on campus.  Unexpectedly, a few of his friends call at his dorm to encourage him to attend a party on campus.  He refuses, for he remembers that some of his friends use drugs, drink, and he dislikes this behavior.  He does not want any part to do with it, and decides instead to study.

The floor on which he lives is coed.  He is a rather shy fellow and have problems meeting girls, but on this particular night, Sally from across the hall comes knocking on his door.  She wants to borrow a cup of sugar.  John however is taken by surprise.  He blushes and becomes tongue tied as their eyes meet.  Their attraction was mutual.  He hurriedly leaves to get her the sugar and invites her in to wait until he gets it.  What follows was to change John’s life when Sally tells him that she is interested in seeing more of him.  John agrees, and they begin going on dates.  Today, they are life long partners and are married.  Is this luck or not?  If John had gone to the party with his friends he would have missed Sally when she came calling.  Or, would Sally have found her way into his life in some other way?  One never knows.

A miss is as near as a mile

How often does a person venture out in his car and despite driving defensively an accident happens?  However, such an accident may not happen to everyone.  A person may be driving on the freeway, obeying the speed limit, using his blinkers, and looking over his shoulder before moving into the flowing traffic.  Some irresponsible drivers may be weaving in and out of the traffic as they proceed, caring less about safety.  One of these careless drivers serves in front of you, barely missing you.  If he hits you, you surely would be toast.  You know it.  It was so close and it did not happen.

I’m a good driver, but very cautious. I’ve been blessed several times and have been able to avoid a few accidents due to someone else’s stupidity or negligence.

I believe luck doesn\’t make our fate. God do direct our path and all we have to do is ask Him for such direction.
