Modern Language Learning
Some thoughts on how to approach teaching languages to adults.
Met some language learners today want to speak as quickly as possible and one of the methods that encouraged this approach used the word rapid right from the beginning. I could see the advantage on speaking rapidly yet hesitate to apply this method only because it does not allow the student to get a clear sense of phonetics on its own. I have also seen a method where a pen lights up every time the learner comes across the right answer. I have come to the understanding that the method is important but the school should consider the best way to get the student learning.
Often enough the method created is so ingrained in the policy of the school that management cannot see clearly around one major stumbling block: if you are interested in getting students to learn it is important to keep up to date with knew sources of information and the new media available to apply the methodology. In the end I have been using an integrated approach trying to get to put the student’s knowledge into practice and treating him as a contributor in the way that he learns. This all regards teaching adults who are generally more discerning about the quality of English they need and can readily discuss problems they have to affront regarding a lack of comnprehension.
One thing is for sure in getting the person to converse, conversation alone is useless unless it can be backed up with ritual repetitive exercises and references to some kind of grammar base so the new learner can adopt a new speech form.
