Music Lesson Plan for Blind Students in Regular Track Classroom
Students will demonstrate their learned knowledge of music terminology by writing a review of a piece of music which they will hear for the first time using their list of 30 terms.
Computer Activities: Prior to using the computers, the student will prepare their typed Braille materials including their research list and findings for reference. Once at the computers, the student will continue listening to the recording and write their review using Microsoft Word with the Braille keyboard or Braille typewriter. After that section of computer time is complete, students will print out their documents and get them ready to be submitted for a grade. If using a typewriter, the teacher will need the translation from the aide, if using Microsoft Word, the translation will be printed out.
Supporting Activities: As the students are using this lesson as their final project the only supplements they will have access to will be their finished music terminology spreadsheet. The student with the disability will be utilizing Braille documents and the Braille display for this information.
Culminating Activity: Students will hand their reviews in to the teacher and then the teacher will select three to five to read to the class so that students can hear some of the different approaches taken by their peers. The student with the disability will either hand in their aide’s translation or the Microsoft adapted version.
Implementation Plan: Prior to using Microsoft Word, the students will listen to the new piece of music to be reviewed, once, in its entirety. Then it will continue to play as they write their review using the computers for 40 minutes.
Assessment: The following is a rubric that will be used to grade this lesson on a 20 point scale. Each section will be graded 1 to 5, 5 being the highest point total making a perfect score, 20. This part of the assignment will be triple weighted so that this score multiplied by three and added to the 20 possible points from Lesson One and 20 possible points from Lesson 2, a final grade for the project will be tabulated.
